How does solar energy work? Why is it free?

Introduction
Are you tired of paying heavy electricity bills? Then solar energy is a smart solution for you. By using solar energy you can get rid of those hefty electricity bills forever. Using solar energy is also one of the best ways of reducing global warming. You might be wondering how solar energy helps in reducing global warming. Power plants generating electricity emit a lot of carbon dioxide which is a major cause of global warming. Solar energy is a very environmental friendly source of energy. Have you ever wondered how does solar energy work? Read on to find out how solar energy works.

How does solar energy work?
To generate solar energy you need to first set up photovoltaic tiles which are also called solar power cells. These photovoltaic (or PV) tiles contain photovoltaic cells which are responsible for generating solar energy (electricity). There are two slices of silicon inside the photovoltaic cell, one is positive and the other is negative. When the protons from sun light hit neutrons present in the PV cells the neutrons are negatively charged and trapped by magnetic field produced from the opposite fields. This is how electricity (solar energy) is produced. Electricity produced at this point of time is a Direct Current (DC). This current cannot be used for household purpose, because we need Alternating Current (AC) for household purpose. Wires are attached to these PV cells to transmit electricity to inverter for converting DC electricity into AC electricity. During this process some solar energy is lost. But using inverters is a very efficient way as compared to others converters. After conversion the electricity can be stored in batteries for later use.

People may have doubts like, ideally how many PV cells must be used? Or how much solar energy does a PV cell produce? The fact is that choosing number of PV cells depends on the individual need of solar energy and solar energy generation of a PV cell depends on various factors like the amount of sunlight, cloud conditions and weather situations. However it is said that solar panels produce approximately 12 volts of DC electricity.

Why is it free?
It can't be called totally free because it requires a huge one time investment to buy a solar instrument. But once you buy it, it becomes free as there is no charge for using the suns rays to generate energy. It uses the heat of the sun and generates electricity.

Summary
Solar energy is the cleanest way of producing electricity. This is also one of the best ways of reducing global warming. Using solar energy is how you can have a safer and cleaner tomorrow.
